CALCUTTA - Fortunately for boat owners in the Ohio Valley, there's a new master marine mechanic in town in Hookstown's Jason Moore. Anyone who owns a powerboat in the area should have their number on the contact list.

Moore, 41, has earned a solid reputation for his skill, knowledge and reliable work in the marine engine category. This prompted him to start a new venture not far from his western Pennsylvania home. Moore opened Superior Marine Services in Calcutta in September 2017 after operating several marine repair shops in California and western Pennsylvania.

For nearly 15 years, Moore honed his mechanical and ship management skills in the boating industry in busy shops in Marina Del Rey and Long Beach, California. Marina Del Rey is home to approximately 6,500 boats, and Long Beach is home to the Port of Los Angeles. , one of the largest US ports. He ventured to the West Coast at the age of 21 with the encouragement of his brother who lived near Hollywood, California.

“It was a slow winter here, so I sold my boat and my car and got on a train to California. I took everything I had,” Moore said. "I walked for three days, looking for a job. Marina Del Rey had many marine stores. I was hired at the first job I decided to stop at. I ran a show (repair workshop) after 2-3 years."

After five successful years in Marina Del Rey, Moore decided he was ready to run his own store. He and a friend bought a rundown store in San Pedro, about 30 minutes south near Long Beach. He helped grow the business, but after 10 years decided it was time to move on. He was approaching 30 years old, and his desire to return home to Pennsylvania grew stronger. At that time he was married and they had a small son. The decision was made to return home and claim a plot of land that was part of his grandparents' farm. He met his wife, Jessica, in California, but she was originally from Lorian, Ohio, so it was no problem for her to move back east.

"I grew up on a farm. So I wanted to raise my son (JD) the same way,” Moore said. "I thought I could do business elsewhere. Why not come back here."

It didn't take long for Moore to find work at home. His toolbox ended up at the familiar Dockside Marine Services shop in nearby Aliquippa, Pennsylvania, where he began his career as a marine mechanic years ago. He quickly helped expand Dockside's service department. After a successful five-year stint there, Moore landed a good position where he hoped to one day take over the business. After those plans started falling apart recently, Moore decided he had better take the leap and open his own store.

Moore wanted to offer customers a reliable and experienced repair shop with reasonable prices and availability. With four marine stores located in Beaver County, Pa., Moore said the move to eastern Ohio made sense.

“I'm right off of (state) Route 11, which is straight from the north, I'm sitting on one of the busiest roads in Columbiana County, close to the Ohio River and many Ohio lakes. It's perfect for me,” Moore said.

Located at 16224 East Liverpool Road in Calcutta, Superior Marine is housed in a new 50-by-100-foot building that includes a large three-bay repair area, office, main sales counter, sales floor, warehouse and extensive parking.
